Is your company granting the purchasing power bonus? Companies still have until 31 December 2023 to sort things out. What does this mean and what is the way forward?
Companies that turned in a handsome result during the crisis are free to pay their employees a one-off purchasing power bonus in the form of consumption vouchers. By now, most sectors have made arrangements, although some still need to do so. The deadline is fast approaching however: the decision on whether or not to pay a purchasing power bonus must be taken by 31 December 2023 at the latest.
As an employer, it is best to wait for the sectoral negotiations because the interpretation of the concept of a handsome result and the establishment of the amount of the purchasing power bonus can be determined by the sector. If your sector has not decided anything yet, you will not know which sectoral agreements you have to abide by as an employer. This does not simplify matters for employers whose industry has yet to make a decision.
Moreover, you also often depend on the accountant's agenda and other practical concerns before you know which employee should receive which sum by way of a purchasing power bonus. The issuing companies too need time to deliver the cheques to the employees.
Which is why the representative employer and worker organisations have agreed to allow the actual issue of the cheques until 31 March 2024. However, this agreement has yet to be enacted in law, so it has not been definitively confirmed at present. Also bear in mind that sectoral collective bargaining agreements that have already been concluded often specify an earlier issue date. In that case, it is best to go by the text of said collective bargaining agreement.
The special contribution of 16.5% due over the purchasing power bonus in all cases is to be booked no later than the fourth quarter of 2023.
